Longwang to open in Brisbane CBD, early May 2024

Tassis Group’s highly anticipated “Longwang” restaurant will open its doors at 144 Edward Street in early May (2024) breathing new life into Brisbane’s CBD.

Longwang is the first of the Group’s venues to specialise in modern-Asian cuisine, marking a breakthrough into new and exciting territory for second-generation restaurateur, Michael Tassis.

The restaurant resides in what was, not long ago, simply a void; a narrow laneway separating two commercial high rises along Brisbane CBD’s bustling Edward Street. Custom-built for its purpose, Longwang spans three and a half metres wide, by thirty metres long over two and a half levels. In collaboration with Clui Design, the venue’s unique layout includes a formal dining room, flexible function spaces, a rooftop bar and cocktail lounge, and a kitchen that will be fuelled by the culinary power of Executive Chef and partner, Jason Margaritis.

The announcement of the Tassis–Margaritis partnership last year caught the attention of foodies nationwide. Margaritis’ prestige stems from a pedigree of modern Asian restaurants, notably sAme sAme, Donna Chang and Melbourne’s Spice Temple. Says Margaritis, “The opportunity to develop a menu from the ground up was an exciting feat. I've drawn from my love of Chinese and east-Asian cuisines to create a temple of tastiness that encapsulates the best elements of Asian-style banquet dining”.

With 15+ years experience honing his culinary skills in the modern-Asian category, Margaritis unveils a slate of dishes that strike a balance between traditional flavours and modern innovation. And, as a Tassis restaurant, it’s no surprise that seafood plays a leading role on the menu. In fact, seafood is the driving influence behind the moniker of the venue. The name “Longwang” has roots in Chinese mythology, paying homage to Longwang, the Dragon King who commanded the seas.

Celebrated menu items include local mud crabs and Tasmanian rock lobsters, plucked fresh from a live seafood tank and prepared in your choice of three style, plus a variety of wok-tossed fare including bug tail “kung pao” and whole fried baby barramundi with dry red curry snake beans. The menu also hosts an array of non-seafood stars including a Massaman curry made with braised lamb shoulder, slivers of wok-tossed pork belly in sichuan pepper, black bean and chilli, and a charcoal-grilled half chicken slathered in a sweet, sour tamarind driven satay sauce.

Alongside the exquisite selection of share plates is an impeccable wine list, expertly curated by Tassis Group Beverage Director & Sommelier, Ron Almera, that balances new and old world wines with specific emphasis on varietals that complement the Asian cuisine. Adding to the experience, guests can enjoy cocktails tailored to their individual taste preferences upon request at either of the two bars – a special touch for those eager to break free from their comfort zones and embrace Longwang’s unexpected demeanour.

At the helm of front of house is Daniel De Gabrielle, equipped with well over a decade’s worth of experience in leading service at some of Australia’s most premium restaurants, including sAme sAme, Stanley, Gingerboy and Longrain (Melbourne), Bloodwood and Sokyo (Sydney). De Gabrielle’s imperium is knowing how to work the room and ensure every guest is treated with a standard of service that exceeds expectations.

Owner Michael Tassis credits Longwang as the “dream team” and says he couldn’t imagine a better crew to help bring the concept to life. Says Mr Tassis, “This project has been three-years in the making and I’m so excited to unleash something that is so unique, not just to the Tassis Group portfolio, but also within Brisbane’s hospitality landscape”.

Longwang has the capacity to host up to 175 guests (for functions), and thanks to its unique multi-level layout, diners can expect to experience something new and different with every visit.
