Fatcow to raise the steaks on James Street

The latest addition to Fortitude Valley’s booming dining scene is on its way, with Tassis Group set to open Fatcow on James Street on May 8.

Set in a space that’s been custom designed for the restaurant, the reincarnation of Eagle Street’s beloved Fatcow Steak & Lobster is far more opulent than its predecessor.

In keeping with James Street’s reputation for upscale dining, Fatcow will have a lavish glow-up. Taking cues from classic mid-century steakhouses, Fatcow on James Street will boast a solid marble bar, two private dining rooms, and circular booth seating with mirrors on the ceiling above. For more intimate meals, each booth is encircled by its own floor-to-ceiling curtain, allowing diners to create their own private bubble.

The former David Jones space at 10 James Street has been completely redesigned especially for Fatcow. Owner of Tassis Group Michael Tassis, says, ‘With the original Fatcow, we inherited the old Cha Cha Char space and had to make it our own. This time, we’re taking a site that’s never been a restaurant before and turning it into the ideal version of Fatcow.’

The carefully crafted fit-out, courtesy of Clui Design, includes a window in the dining room that overlooks the chef’s grill, so diners can watch their steak cook. ‘Getting the chance to design a world-class steakhouse from scratch is a dream come true,’ says Tassis.

Carnivores will be spoiled for choice, with upwards of 16 steaks available from a wide range of producers. ‘We’re excited to be able to give diners that range of options. Not many restaurants can offer so many different steak brands, but we’ve got relationships with a lot of suppliers across all our venues. We wanted to showcase the incredible variety of beef that’s available,’ says Tassis.

Alongside steak, seafood is a major focus, and Fatcow will feature the only live oyster tank in Brisbane. ‘Everyone’s doing freshly shucked oysters now, but nowhere else is doing them as fresh as this,’ says Tassis. Fresh, local ingredients are at the heart of the Fatcow menu. All seafood is sent straight from trawler to plate within 24 hours.

A wagyu tasting board – featuring three of the venue’s most premium cuts of steak and served with sides – will also be available, alongside returning signature dishes such as Steak and Lobster, and the indulgent Golden Fatcow – steak wrapped in gold leaf. Steering the kitchen in this ultra-decadent direction is Head Chef, Garry Newton, who returns to the Fatcow family after stints at Herves and Rich & Rare.

The meticulously curated wine list spotlights 300 local and international varieties, all chosen to perfectly complement the steak and seafood on offer. Also behind the marble bar, Fatcow features an array of playful and unexpected cocktails with decadent garnishes, proving drinks can be as artistic as they are delicious.

Caio Rosetto, manager of the original restaurant, is returning to manage Fatcow on James Street. Rosetto has a long history with Tassis Group, with tenure at the now-closed Rico Bar and Dining on Eagle Street, as well as the group’s acclaimed West End restaurant, Yamas Greek + Drink.

Tassis Group has a wealth of experience with premium steak and seafood venues. Since closing the original Fatcow Steak and Lobster in 2022, Tassis Group has opened several successful Brisbane venues, including seafood-focussed Fosh at Portside Wharf, and steak and seafood restaurant Rich & Rare in West End. The group’s first modern Asian restaurant, Longwang, is also set to open on Edward Street in May.

In its new location on one of Brisbane’s most luxurious dining streets, Fatcow on James Street is set to become a destination in its own right. Combining the premium produce and outstanding service of the original restaurant with the effortless glamour of James Street, Fatcow offers Brisbane a truly world-class experience.
